From there, the town began to grow under the name "Upper Yonge St.", and Hill built more mills, a tannery, the first house, and the first store.In 1801 Abner Miles who was a York region merchant and inkeeper settled in the area, established a store, an ashery and an inn.The village was known briefly as Miles Hill then Mount Pleasant and by 1830 the name Richmond Hill had been well established.In June of that year, a Vermont Quaker named Timothy Rogers traveled to the area surrounding Holland's Landing towards Lake Simcoe, looking for an appropriate place for a new Quaker settlement.Because of the anticipated violence from the American Revolution, several Pennsylvania and Vermont-based Quaker families wanted to move north to get away from the unrest, and did so with Timothy Rogers in 1801.
When Lieutenant-Governor John Graves Simcoe first surveyed the area in 1794, the core of Richmond Hill, Yonge St., was envisioned as a military road, to serve as an inland connection between York and Fort Penetanguishene. Despite its initial conception as a military route, Yonge Street's opportunities for settlement were inevitable.
